2nd Annual Competition in Downtown Gilroy
On October 30th and 31st, our gym, XIOS Strength & Conditioning, hosted the 2nd Annual South County Open Weightlifting Competition in downtown Gilroy.
Competitors from all over the Bay Area and the country came to downtown Gilroy to participate. From Menlo College, Stanford University, Resident Barbell Club, O.M.R. Performance, Lift 6 for 6, Big Bend Strength and Conditioning, META, Golden State Barbell Club, Fortified Strength, One World Barbell Club, and more. A total of 50 lifters competed throughout the two-day event.
Seven of our XIOS Olympic Weightlifting athletes competed at the meet; Emma Donovan and Megan Selbach-Allen competed in the women’s session on the 30th, while Gabe Engquist, Alfred Te, Frankie Martinez, Ed Niizawa, and Michael Ortega competed in the male’s session on the 31st. Emma qualified for the A.O. series, Michael qualified for Junior Nationals, and Gabe qualified for Youth Nationals. Way to show up and show out, team!
Winners from the first day consisted of athletes 1st Tawny Alviola (Unattached), 2nd Tatum Dioro (Menlo College Weightlifting), 3rd Kimberly Wiese (Fortified Strength).
Winners from the second day 1st Nathan Prokop (Menlo College Weightlifting), 2nd Marvin Allam (Lift 6 for 6), 3rd Kyle Lee (Unattached), with Marvin Allam qualifying for the A.O. Finals in Denver, Colorado next month.
For the Halloween costume contest, Gabe Engquist, Michael Ortega, and Jordan Conragen dressed up as a pickle, shark, and wolf. The winner of the costume contest was Gabriella Clarke who dressed up as Coach Andrew. Great choice, Gabby!
It was so good to see all the athletes compete. We do not doubt that they will only progress in the future and can’t wait to see them at the next South County Open next year!
